SSC 2017 Exam calendar has been announced and with this, the Schedule of CGL 2017 and CHSL 2017 Exams is out. As per the calendar information, CGL 2017 Notification, will be announced on 11th March, 2017 and Tier-1 Exams are scheduled in June/July, 2017. In this article, we will share the complete details of Descriptive Paper for CGL 2017 Exam. As the descriptive paper is being conducted by SSC for the first time, therefore candidates, have many questions and confusions regarding this. Here we will give the detailed explanation regarding the Pattern and Syllabus of Descriptive Paper, so that, you will be in no doubt and appear in the exam with full preparation.

Moreover, Descriptive Paper for CGL 2017 Exam is equally important part of SSC CGL 2017 Syllabus as we have  CGL Tier-1 and CGL Tier-2 Exams. Marks obtained in the descriptive paper are used to the preparation of Final Merit.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus for CGL Descriptive Paper


As the name specifies, Descriptive Paper requires you write it in Pen Paper mode. This paper is introduced as a replacement of Interview. Earlier Tier-3 comprises of Interview, but with the Government's Decision to do away with Interview for Jr. Level posts, So Descriptive Paper is introduced.

Another reason for introducing the Descriptive Paper is to check the applicants ability in Writing, which is must for a Government Job. 

We all know that Tier-1 and Tier-2 are to be conducted in Online mode, while descriptive paper is to be conducted in offline mode.

 Syllabus : The Syllabus of Descriptive Paper is limited and it includes only Two Questions, having overall weighatge of 100 marks. 

  • Application / Letter Writing  of minimum 150 words
  • Essay/ Passage of 250 words.

Keep Note of it.....
  • Time Duration of Descriptive Paper is 1 hour only.
  • Descriptive Paper is Bilingual ie. You have to option to write the Paper in Hindi Or English
  • However, don't write the Paper with a mix of Hindi and English, doing so will result in non-evaluation of your paper. 


When SSC is going to conduct the Descriptive Paper ?


Yes, knowing the date of Descriptive Paper is important, but even more important is that which CGL Descriptive Paper, you are referring too.

In 2017, SSC will conduct 2 descriptive paper, one for CGL 2016 and other for CGL 2017.

CGL 2016 Descriptive Paper: If, you have appeared in the CGL 2016 Tier-2 Exam, then Date of descriptive paper will be announced only after the announcement of Tier-2 Results. So, you need to wait till the announcement of results as, it is only after that, we can expect SSC to announce the Dates of paper.

CGL 2017 Descriptive Paper: If, going by the Tentative Schedule of SSC Exam Calendar 2017, then the Descriptive Paper for CGL 2017 Exam is tentatively scheduled on 12tth November, 2017. So, there is enough time, before, you could appear for 2017 Descriptive paper.




Who can appear in the SSC CGL Descriptive Paper ?


Only those candidates, who qualify the CGL Tier-2 Exam, as per the Cut off marks fixed by commission can only appear for CGL Descriptive Paper.

SSC will shortlist a sufficient no. of candidates for Descriptive Paper, keeping the vacancies for CGL 2017 Exam. 

How much marks, Do i need to Qualify ?

You need a minimum of 33% marks in Descriptive Paper to Qualify it. 

But remember only 33% marks are not sufficient in this paper, As the marks obtained in this paper, are to be added in the Final Merit. So, try to get as many marks, you can in this CGL 2017 Descriptive Paper.



Previous Descriptive Paper Questions


SSC had conducted the Descriptive Paper only once and that was in the CHSL 2015 Tier-2 Exam. This exam was conducted on 18th September, 2016 and Next Descriptive Paper will be for CGL 2016 Exam. So before, you appear for CGL 2017 Descriptive Paper, you have as many questions, required to understand the Pattern and Nature of Questions, asked in this Paper.

SSC CGL 2017 Syllabus for Tier-1 Tier-2

If, you have been preparing for SSC Exams for a while, then this post, will enlighten you, on the Changes in the SSC CGL 2017 Syllabus and the New pattern of CGL Exam.

But before, we discuss the Syllabus, you should know the Important Dates for SSC CGL 2017 Exam. as knowing the dates, will help you in making a preparation plan for the exam.

1) Date of announcement of SSC CGL 2017 Notification : 11th March, 2017

2) Commencement of SSC CGL Online Registration: 11th March to 15th April, 2017

3) Dates of SSC CGL Tier-1 Exam : 19th June to 2nd July, 2017

Changes in the SSC CGL Pattern and Syllabus 


Remember, there are No Changes made in the Syllabus, changes are made only in the Scheme and Pattern of Exam only. Some of the major changes made by SSC in 2016 pertaining to CGL Exam are


(I) Changes in the Scheme of Tier-1 Exam

1) From 2016, onwards, Tier-1 will be an online Exam. Previously Tier-1 is conducted through Pen Paper Mode.

2) No. of Questions in Tier-1 stage have been reduced from 200 to 100 Questions only

3) There will be 25 Questions in Each Section and each Question carry 2 marks. Previously there were 50 Questions in each Question and every question is of 1 mark only.

4) Total alotted Time for CGL Tier-1 Exam is reduced from 2 hours to 75 minutes only.

5) There is negative marking of 0.50 against every incorrect answer.


(II) Changes in the Tier-2 Exam

In Tier-2 stage, nothing much has been changed, only change in regarding the Mode of Exam.

From 2016 onwards, Tier-2 will be held in Online Mode (Computer Based Paper).

There are No changes in the Syllabus, Pattern and Scheme of Tier-2 Exam


(III) Changes in the Tier-3 Exam

Prior to 2016, Tier-3 of CGL Exam, comprises of Computer Proficiency test /Skill test and even before that, Tier-3 comprises of Interviews too.

But from 2016 CGL Exam, Tier-3 comprises of Descriptive Paper to be conducted in Pen Paper mode. Meanwhile, Tier-IV of CGL Exam comprises of Computer Proficiency test / Skill test, which is of Qualifying nature.

Knowing the Syllabus in advance will help you in the long run. As SSC CGL Tier-1 exam is scheduled in the month of June, 2017, you should start your preparation right now, as Syllabus is long and need wide extensive approach.

Subject Wise Syllabus for SSC CGL 2017 Tier-1 Exam


SSC has done good thing by announcing the Syllabus in advance. Unlike, IBPS and other recruitment board, SSC had given a detailed Syllabus for each of the 4 subjects of the Tier-1 Exam.

1) General Intelligence and Reasoning : The subject is better known as Reasoning and these days, it is part of almost every competitive exam. Questions in this section, comprises of both Verbal as well as Non-Verbal Reasoning. 

This section comprises of 25 Questions with each question carrying 2 marks.

2) General Awareness: This section requires knowledge of different subjects Like Polity, Economy, History, Geography, General Science etc. The objective is to test the candidate's General Awareness regarding the society and environment around him.

Again 25 Questions will be asked and each question carry weightage of 2 marks per question

3) Quantitative Aptitude : In simple words, this is Maths. Here, we have questions on Square Roots, Geometry, Equations, Ratio and Proportion, Time/Speed/Distance , Number system etc.

The Questions in this section are upto 10th standard only. Moreover, this is one of the high scoring section among all. Here, you will have to attempt 25 Questions carrying 50 Marks

 4) English Comprehension : Without this section, CGL Syllabus, can never be complete. The purpose of this section is to check candidates ability to understand English, Application of Grammar rules, Writing ability etc. Questions in this section comprises of 


  • Sentence Correction
  • Use of Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb etc
  • Synonym / Antonyms
  • Passage / Comprehension
  • Fill in the blanks etc

Syllabus for SSC CGL 2017 Tier-2 Exam 


Those who qualify the CGL Tier-1 Exam, will have to appear for Tier-2 Exams which is scheduled from 5th to 8th September, 2017. It is worth mentioning here that Tier-2 will be an online exam.

Tier-2 comprises of 4 Papers, out of which Paper-1 and Paper-2 are compulsory for everyone, while the Paper-3 &4 are for those, who have applied for specific posts.

2) Duration of Descriptive Paper is 1 hour

3) Descriptive Paper comprises of

SSC CGL 2017 Selection Process

Preparing for Upcoming CGL Exam. Know the Detailed Selection Process for CGL 2017 Exam 



If, you are serious of getting a Government Job in 2017, then we have a good news for you. 2017 will be big year, as far hiring is Government sector in concerned. It is expected there will be huge recruitment in Income Tax Department, Central Government Departments and Ministries , Railways etc. And as the recruitment for these departments in being done through SSC CGL Exam, and therefore, there will be Bumper vacancies in CGL 2017 Exam.

SSC had already announced the CGL 2017 Exam Dates for Tier-1 and Tier-2 Exams. The Notification for SSC CGL 2017, will be announced on 11th March, 2017 and the exam is scheduled in the month of June/June 2017. Recently, SSC had released an important Notification regarding the Age Limit for SSC CGL 2017 Exam. As per this Notification, the crucial date for determining the age limit is 1st August, 2017.

If, you are preparing for the Upcoming CGL 2017 Exam, then you might be interested to know, whether, there will be any changes in the Selection process for CGL 2017 Exam. We would like to inform you that CGL Selection Process underwent major changes in 2016 and there is a least possibility that Selection process will further be amended.

In this post, we will discuss the Detailed Selection process for CGL 2017 Exam. It is always, helpful, if you know the Details, Like Syllabus, Pattern Selection process and Scheme of Exam in advance, as these things, will help you in your preparation for the exam. 


How SSC CGL 2017 Selection Process Works ?


The Selection process for CGL 2017 Exam, comprises of  Four tiers viz Tier-1, Tier-2, Tier-3 and Tier-4. Here, each Tier of the Exam, can be understood as different stages of Exam. As we move at the higher level, the competitions gets lower, but the Difficulty level increases.

For Example : In the Tier-1 stage, all the applicants who have applied for CGL Exam, will have to appear for the exam. An approximate no. of 14 lakh candidates have appear in the CGL 2016 Tier-1 Exam.  Out of these 14 lakh, only 1.5 lakh Qualify the Tier-1 Exam and these Qualified candidates, will have to appear in the Tier-2 stage.

Now, we will discuss in details, the Scheme and Pattern of CGL 2017 Exam.

(I) Tier-1 Exam :All those Aspirants, who submitted their applications for CGL 2017 Exam, will have to appear for Tier-1 Exam. Following are the aspects of Tier-1 Exam

1) As per the SSC Calendar 2017, CGL Tier-1 Exam is tentatively scheduled to be held from 19th June to 2nd July, 2017

2) Tier-1 Exam is to be conducted through Online mode only (Objective Type).

3) No. of Questions in Tier-1 Exam have been reduced from 200 to 100 Questions only.  

4) Allotted time for CGL Tier-1 Exam is 75 minutes only. 

5) There is negative marking of 0.50 marks for every incorrect answer.


(II) Tier-2 Exam : Those who qualify the Tier-1 Exam, as per the Cut off marks specified for CGL 2017 Exam, will have to appear for Tier-2 stage. 

Here is the Scheme of SSC CGL 2017 Tier-2 Exam

1) In Tier-2 Stage, there will 4 Papers of 200 marks each. While the Paper-1 and Paper-2 is compulsory for everyone. Paper-3 is only for those, who have applied for Jr. Statistical Officer and Paper-4 is for those, who have applied for Assistant Audit officer in C&AG.

All these Four Papers are conducted through online mode and comprises of Multiple choice Questions 


  • Paper-1 : Quantitative Abilities (100 Questions carrying 200 marks)
  • Paper-2 : English Language and Comprehension (200 Questions carrying 200 marks
  • Paper-3 : Statistics (100 Questions of 200 marks)
  • Paper-4: Finance and Accounts (100 Questions of 200 marks)
Note : For Paper-1, Paper-2 and Paper-4, there will be negative marking of 0.50 marks, while for Paper-2, it is 0.25 for every incorrect answer.

(III) Tier-3 Exam: The third stage in the SSC CGL 2017 Selection process is Descriptive Paper of 100 marks, which will be conducted through Pen and Paper mode. 

Descriptive Paper comprises of Essay Writing / Letter writing . The Questions in this paper of 10+2 level.

You will need a minimum of 33% marks to Qualify the Descriptive Paper.


(IV) Tier-4 Exam :  Tier-4 of CGL Exam, would continue to be of Data Entry test / Computer Proficiency test . Tier-4 of Exam, would be of qualifying nature.

No Interview in SSC CGL Exam 


Prior to 2015, SSC CGL Selection Process comprises of  Tier-1. Tier-2 and Interview, but from 2016, Government has decided to Do away with Interview for CGL Exam and therefore, as an alternative. SSC had introduced the Descriptive Paper for CGL 2017 Exam.
